RE: Data Bin Files - Looking Ahead

[Moderator's note: And of course, many thanks to you Peter. I have a
reprieve of a couple of weeks from my company, Education Development
Center, to keep the list going after funding runs out as we try to find
alternatives. After getting a lot of feedback, it seems that most people
have had good experiences with Yahoo groups. I am considering this and
also thinking about continuing to moderate it for awhile to see how things
go. I'm hoping that if we keep it moderated we can maintain whatever focus
and quality/ benefit members have found in it. Feedback from any? Bob]

Thank you Becky and Bob

We have enjoyed getting the positive feedback from our product development
from the spk2wrt site over the last few years. I will genuinely miss the
"virtual" family on the site. Although I am sure many people will achieve
success with alternative arrangements with other sites, this site's
community will inevitably be fragmented and become reduced in value. My
own
attempts at joining other sites have always proved to be too much trouble
and have limited activity for our own involvement to be worthwhile.

I still feel that an after-spk2wrt solution can be found which has
benefits
over the current alternatives. Let's hope so.

Best regards, Peter

[Moderator's note. There, Peter. Never let it be said that I only
forwarded
messages of congratulation to myself! Bob]

Peter,

I do appreciate the power of your software. In my 20 years successfully
tweaking clients' systems (although new to Dragon), I of course back up
prior to testing and always test on my own unit thoroughly before
attempting
anything on a client's computer. I've been able in the past to come up
with
"creative tweaks". Perhaps I'll hit a wall this time, but I'm interested
in
at least trying.

Keyspell is a great product with a lot of power and one that can help many
individuals. Thank you for developing it.
Becky

This sort of chaos is exactly why we developed our Stories Organizer.
Remember, if you accidentally damage or move files or folders around
wrongly, you could end up with a DNS system that no longer works at all.

[Moderator's note. Since I haven't worked with v.8 at all and haven't
tried
adding texts for a while, I can't help. It seems to me we used to simply
follow the file naming convention and pattern in the folder, but I
dunno...
Any ideas here? Bob]

Hi,

I've spent a couple hours now trying to get a document added in as a
training file. I'm "almost there"...but reached a wall.

This may be too long for the list. Just in case someone can help:

I started with the "old" directions Bob sent me (thank you so much) but
accommodating for bin file data in DNS8. My trainig file was created in a
text editor and saved as becky.bin, located in the appropriate folder
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\ScanSoft\NaturallySpeaking8\Data\Training\enx\ ). Did not show up in
the enrollment list.

I looked at the existing bin files, and discovered there are 2 types:
enroll#.bin and data#.bin. I opened them and saw that the data.bin files

are
text. Many of the enroll.bin files list training file information (e.g.,
enroll4.bin lists the 6 training files that appear in my new enrollment
training list).

I copied the enroll4.bin file and created an enroll10.bin with the added
information about my file [My New Enrollment Text (added becky.bin).
Nothing.

I edited the enroll4.bin file and added my new information. Now my file
appeared in the training list as "My New Enrollment Text (added)
becky.bin".
When I tried to open it I got a file missing prompt, "The required file
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\ScanSoft\NaturallySpeaking8\Data\Training\enx\ is missing. Please
reinstall Dragon Naturally Speaking to restore this file.

However, all the original training files still work OK.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
Becky

[Moderator's note. I think you've gotten several responses now that talk
about how to accomplish this, no? However, let us know if there's
something
that's still unclear, as it could be an issue for others as well. Bob]

Hi,

Thanks for the reminder about Keystone. Although I'm new to it, I feel
it's
a great product, and one that can improve SR for many people. Most of our
families are on limited budgets. If they don't need the
word/phrase/sentence
break point, and the in-window readback that Keyspell offers, and if
there's
a way to incorporate their own stories using DNS software, I'd like to be
able to show them how to do this. Any info would be appreciated.

Becky

KeyStone SpeechMaster's Stories Organiser provides a foolproof method by
which you can turn any text file into DNS-compatible scripts which are
simple added to those normally available with the product. You can have
your
text automatically broken up into words, phrases or sentences and/or place
your own break point indicators in your text.

Details are available on our commercial web site www.keyspell.com.

[Moderator's note. Hi, Becky. Time was, back in the old days, that you
could
just go to Joel Gould's site--he was one of the original DD and DNS
engineers--for such tricks. I'm sure it's in our archives also. I will
forward you a copy of the old instructions from Joel's site. HOwever, the
training files were just text files with the '.bin' extension added in
naming. I assume that's still the case. Maybe others have a handier online
source for this info. Bob]

Hi,

I read the responses posted 2/3/05 from Bill Wade and Ed Rosenthal to the
question posed by Eileen C. Haddon regarding the data bin files (located

in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\ScanSoft\NaturallySpeaking8\Data\Training\Enx)

Wow! I didn't even know these were here.

Eileen said she'd "also like the ability to put in my own text for
training.." So would I! I didn't know this was possible. How do you do
this?

1. What software do you use to create/save the file?
2. I assume it must be saved with a .bin extension?
3. What protocol does the base name of the file need to follow? I see data
bin files numbered data0.bin through data19.bin and then data 33.bin
through
data40.bin 4. Where does Dragon get the name that will appear in the list
of
training texts?

Thanks
Becky
