I also have been using VR with a laptop since DNS 4.0. I have had NO
problems using traditional mic's. Yes, I have almost 100 % accuracy with
the USB mic - however, I have had the same results with the traditional
mic's. The issue of sound cards and laptops and fan noise or whatever -
isn't this a thing of the past?
My point: I would not go as far as to say that a USB mic is a must with
laptops. Non USB mics can work well with laptops also.

I would recommend using Windows 2000 in conjunction with a USB microphone.
When using a laptop a USB microphone IS A MUST. Typically, the sound
systems that laptops come with are not good enough to use with Dragon
NaturallySpeaking. USB microphones provide their own sound systems.

Subject: signal to noise ratios

We are making slow progress in using DNS with a CP kid who has NO voice
impairment. The best signal to noise ration that we can get with the mike
that came with 5.0 preferred on our HP 5440 laptop is 16 or 17 to 1.
A friend who uses the same program but with a Telex USB mike routinely
gets 25 to 1.

We tried to do a trial with his mike but couldn't even get it installed.
(Some people think that the fact that the laptop came with Windows ME is
the problem, but I also seem to remember that laptops and Dragon are not
such a good combination.)

My major question: How important is the sensitivity issue? And is using a
USB mike a good way to increase it?

Assuming that a better signal to noise ratio would be a significant help,
how can we best proceed:

Install Windows 98 on the laptop
Forget about trying to use a laptop with DNS and get a desktop
Switch to Mac OS10 and the new improved ViaVoice?

It's not just the kid that has trouble with our present laptop
arrangement.I've trained it up pretty well and although I get along better
than she
does, it really writes a lot of garbage.

thanks for any advice!
