The voc. ed. folks who teach about farming, marketing, and that kind of
stuff. What it means is that measurement can track your progress and maybe
guide you but it doesn't cause progress. Our test-happy bureaucracy seems
to have gotten confused here, so that all (and I mean ALL) class room
activity in some places is directed solely at test score improvement. I
wasn't addressing DNS specifically, but using it as an example of an
activity that is not immediately measured on any of those high-stakes tests
and therefore not seen as valid. The testing folks, from my vantage point,
have gotten entirely carried away with testing and measuring as activities
unto themselves and have lost sight of what real education is. Right now
what we are teaching too much of is "how to take and pass paper and pencil
tests."
