The headband seems a bit big on him, and he also has a tendency
to play with the microphone when speaking. Before I decide this
will or won't work, I want to make sure that I've explored
reasonable options for other types of microphones (within a
reasonable cost range). Is there an "easy" or time efficient
way to do this? Is there a desk top microphone that could be
tried?

Before trying a desktop microphone (which are recommended for
quiet environments--they pick up every noise) you may want to
consider a behind the head type of headband or headset.....there
are also ones that rest on the neck--all are very adjustable and
comfortable.

Array microphones can also be considered.

I currently have a dual goal: to increase his typing speed
independent of, yet while exploring various options with voice
dictation.

There is an excellent book called "Voice Recognition Technology
in Education - Factors for Success" by Mick Donegan
ISBN 1 903303 001

We could only find it in the UK and ordered thousands to use as
hand outs at educational conventions and schools we visit in the
area. If you're interested in getting one --email me privately.
(it will be available in .PDF form on our site shortly)

Details of this book can be seen here: (3rd book down)
