Celebrate National Inclusive Schools Week, December 3-7, 2001!
National Inclusive Schools Week will be celebrated in schools and
classrooms throughout the country during the week of December 3-7, 2001.
Sponsored by the National Institute for Urban School Improvement, the
purpose of National Inclusive Schools Week is to highlight and celebrate
the progress of our nation's schools in providing a supportive and quality
education to an increasingly diverse student population. The Week will also
provide an important opportunity for educators, students, and parents to
discuss what else needs to be done in order to ensure that their schools
continue to improve their ability to successfully educate all children.
Read more about the Week and learn about the events planned to date by
visiting our new National Inclusive Schools Week Web site:
http://www.edc.org/urban/nisw.html. A celebration kit will be available for
downloading from this Web site later this month. The kit will include
publications, suggested readings for children and adults, research, fact
sheets, materials speaking to the benefits of inclusive schools, and
suggestions for ways in which schools and classrooms can recognize the Week
.
Celebrations begin Monday, October 15, with "Using Children's Literature to
Build an Inclusive Community," a free, online forum for teachers and
families, facilitated by Jeri Muoio, EDC staff member and Assistant
Director of the Urban Special Education Leadership Collaborative, and Marie
Sanders, Assistant Professor of Education, Bellarmine University. Share
with colleagues and parents your favorite books that have helped you
discuss issues of diversity, disability, and community with your students
or own children. Login by visiting http://www.edc.org/urban/forum.html.
