Because Sound Blaster has been the premier sound card for so long, many
software applications were written only to work with Sound Blaster cards.
This is particularly true in gaming. For example, many early dos based
games require cards by other manufactures to emulate the Sound Blaster to
work properly. In other words, it means the software will work, not that
the sound quality is necessarily the same.
