Wanted to mention another thought that many of you may need to consider.
Noise Canceling USB Microphones should / will be a standard in educational
environments.
The advent of these microphones along with an enterprise implementation of
a speech recognition system such as Dragon NaturallySpeaking Enterprise in
a
High School or College will increase the viability of speech recognition in
every classroom. This is very important considering the merger/acquisition
of L&H and Dragon. With these two giants working collectively, I do expect
speech recognition accuracy to boast 98% accuracy for most all users within
2 years. Also, considering the large percentage stake Microsoft has in L&H
and their mutual agreements for porting speech into the operating system
for
easier system voice control.
What does this all mean?
- An instructor may use a wireless microphone. While lecturing, his words
will appear on screen and may be saved to a text file. Not only does this
help the vision impaired individuals, but quads and all students in general
as they have typewritten lectures.
- A student will be able to use any speech aware computer in any classroom
/
campus. This is where Enterprise and USB microphones are especially
important. You will have the same voice profile, and the same voice
characteristics regardless of the computer you are using. You can even use
the USB for your home computer. Just need to copy voice files.
- Lastly, these microphones will give the best accuracy possible regardless
of your sound system. So, cheaper laptops and desktops may enjoy the
accuracy higher-end systems do. Of course, there are other variables to
consider here.
