    Speaking to Write

    Hello All:

ScreenSpeaker is a screen reader that also provides assistance with
homophones (scans for and provides assistance with selecting the correct
word) and spell checking. It reads any editable text so it can also read
web pages and scanned text. ScreenSpeaker can be used for visually
    impaired
as well as for dyslexic individuals as it can be set up to provide various
levels of read-back ability. ScreenSpeaker also assists in the enrollment
process in Dragon NaturallySpeaking. It does this by providing alternate
enrollment texts with shorter pieces and with pieces that have less text on
the screen at once. It also reads the enrollment text to the enrollee, a
bit at a time, so that the enrollee simply repeats what SS reads to him.
After reading the enrollment text to the enrollee, SS prompts the
    individual
to repeat what was read to him so that he can then record that piece of
text. The text-to-speech engine appears to be more sophisticated in SS
    than
in DNS. The capability to interrupt the readback of text by voice is
feasible in SS as well, although it is not currently activated. SS takes
control of the numeric keypad (if so permitted) and highlights as it reads
back by sentence, line or word. SS can be told to jump to any particular
point in the text to begin the read-back. SS can be linked to a sister
program, called KeySpell, to provide phonemic spelling assistance
(particularly helpful in the correction box) when needed.

I myself have no LD or VI issues. However, I always use SS to read back my
dictated documents as misrecognitions sometimes slip by me during the
proofreading process. On my web site, you can see case studies of adults
using SS and case studies of children using DNS with SS to assist them.

Please feel free to send any other questions that you may have to me.
    Thank
you for your interest in ScreenSpeaker.

    Best wishes,

    Shelley

If you go to the web site listed in the ad, you'll see that ScreenSpeaker
    is
a program to provide voice feedback to dictated text. It's apparently
    aimed
at people with various disabilities, including visual.

    Hi All:

<What is ScreenSpeaker? How does it differ from DNS>

Is anyone on the list using ScreenSpeaker? If so, can you describe the
    difference between it and DNS.

    Thanks for asking, Kara.
