hi tom, sorry to hear you haven't been successful. i agree with you - the
technology has a long way to go! my school is looking into the use of
c-print to provide real-time captioining/notetaking instead. contact ntid
for info. good luck and i will definitely contact the group with the
results
of our research here, once they're done (will be presenting a paper at iced
in sydney later this year if you're coming)cheers -- dani

My response is that I wanted to use VR in a general Ed class for
mainstreamed deaf students (we are currently using computer-aided
notetaking). When I tried DNS 4.0 preferred with my own students in a
one-to -one situation, I quickly realize that the greatest limitation is
not in the microphone or in RAM, but in the fact that conversation and
instruction differs greatly from dictation. While recognition is around 95%
when I'm dictating, it is closer to 50% during normal conversation which is
not enough for anyone to make sense of. I have concluded that while this is
a perfect solution to the problem for deaf students, the technology needs
to advance quite a bit before we can give a mic to a teacher or professor
and have it recognize verbatim. Best of luck to you on your quest and if
you are more successful than I am, please let all of us know.
Thanks,
