This was covered in a previous to thread, however there have been several
changes that make it worthwhile revisiting.
There are three primary types of recording devices that can be used with
speech recognition software: analog recording devices which use magnetic
tape (Norcom 2500), digital MiniDisc (Sony MZ Walkman), and digital flash
RAM recorders (VoiceIt, Olympus, etc.). Each has its relative advantages
and disadvantages, and while none of them are "simple to use" they all can
provide adequate throughput with properly trained speech recognition
software, and patience.
Analog Devices-these are traditional recording devices using magnetic tape.
As a general rule, you will not want to use a "standard" recorder. The
best is from a company in Connecticut, U.S.A. called Norcom Electronics.
Their Norcom 2500 uses special analog technology and magnetic tapes, which
when played into the computer through a special coupler (SRC-1) provides a
good level of accuracy. One of its greatest strengths is that it can use
the same voice file (although I would create another) as direct speech
input. It has excellent ergonomics, and it is very familiar to most people
who dictate. One of the drawbacks is the tapes are only 15 minutes in
length, and record on only one side-this was done to improve the quality of
the recording medium when supporting the voice recognition software.
Approximate Cost for a complete package is $425.00.
Digital MiniDisc-the best known of these devices is the Sony MZ R 55
digital Walkman. This device has generally proved to be the most accurate
on throughput as the digital medium records a very "clean" file. It is
then played into the computer via the line in connection. The biggest
problem with this technology is that the device was not originally intended
to be used for dictation support... therefore the ergonomics and direct
play in are cumbersome at best, and I am no longer recommending this
particular device.
Approximate cost for a complete package is $350.00.
Digital flash RAM recorders-these are the latest supporting devices for
transcription support. We use the VoiceIt 3200 recorder, with a high
degree of success (particularly with NaturallySpeaking software), but it
must be coupled with an add-on microphone for support of speech recognition
software (the built in microphone does not provide adequate accuracy). I
like the file and foldering system and find the ergonomics are excellent.
These transfer the data digitally and operate with special software that
makes linking to the computer fairly easy.
Approximate cost for a complete package is $200 .00.
As a general rule I tell all users that want to use recording devices that
they should learn to speak to and manage speech recognition software
directly before moving on to recorded dictation. It is been my experience
that without this step most users of recording devices quickly become
dissatisfied and abandon their use.

Dear Spk2wrt
Is it possible to use recorded speech
with voice recognition software?
