Philips FreeSpeech

Nancy

I read your message recently about Philips FreeSpeech. There are
two versions of FreeSpeech - FreeSpeech 98 and FreeSpeech
2000. I am currently using FreeSpeech 2000 on a training program
for people with disabilities with great success so far. The majority of
the trainees have either a physical disability or dyslexia.

One thing I have noticed about FreeSpeech 2000 is that, like most
products of its type, it is very resource hungry. The optimum
specification referred to in the documentation is probably still a bit
short of what is actually required in reality. This could be the cause
of the problems you have indicated with respect to the command &
control features of the software and having to turn FreeSpeech off to use
other programs. I have found that FreeSpeech 2000 runs very effectively
on a 300Mhz machine with 128 MB RAM and at least 250MB of free
disk space after installation for swapping.

I have no experience of running FreeSpeech 2000 with MS Works
so I cannot comment on that. I can dictate directly into MS Word
and use all the command and control features without any difficulty
and would be achieving about 98% accuracy.

I evaluated DNS v.3.0 and FreeSpeech 98 and 2000. I selected
FreeSpeech 2000 because I could dictate directly into MS Word
using it. With DNS 3.0 I found that the recognition accuracy
dropped quite considerably when I tried dictating directly into MS
Word. Also I found that the command and control features of
FreeSpeech 2000 worked better than those in DNS 3.0.

Hope this helps - if you have any other comments/queries about
FS 2000 please feel free to contact me.
