Re: Mac vs Pc

Unfortunately, the solutions that have been offered here for speech recognition
on the Mac (e.g., with SoftWindows) have been VERY technology intensive and I
think all required a Windows card (with 16-bit sound), not a software emulator.
AS you may have seen, continuous SR is coming to the Mac, but it will likely
require a very high end machine, and it may not be appropriate to your
daughter's needs at any rate. Most people with the kinds of speech difficulties
associated with CP do better with discrete SR (i.e., DragonDictate - Window
only) unless their speech is completely unaffected.

At any rate, you shouldn't make a whole hardware change unless your daughter has
had a chance to try out the speech rec software to ensure that it will work for
her.

I have a 12 year old daughter with CP who currently uses an older mac laptop
with Co-Writer and Word for most of her writing needs. We are currently looking
at adding speech recognition. Some of the letters I have read in this sight
leads me to believe speech recognition could aid in my daughters speech
deficiencies. Also it could work to improve her overall comunications skills.

Since we have to upgrade my daughters computer we would like some insight on how
to decide between a Power Mac and a PC.
Can you run speech recognition software on Soft Windows on a Mac? Does it
work?

Since the upgrade hopefully will be provided by the school, it might take
some time. Until that time I have found a place that will lend us systems
and/or software for training and evaluation. I understand the mac version
will be out later this year. Any insight will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
