I had the opportunity to hear Joel Gould, Dragon (Dictate and) NatSpeak
developer and maven, last night at the Boston Voice Users Group (hope I got
the name right--several of its members participate on this listserv some,
although most are personal users and not immediately involved in education).
He showed v. 3.5 and NaturallyMobile and NaturallyOrganized and it was
generally a techie's delight, which meant that some of the Q&A left me behind.
However, I listen for things that are meaningful to me in terms of what we do
on this listserv and in our project.
Joel said one thing that indirectly confirms something we reiterate all the
time that is certainly UNSTATED in the promotional and training materials
accompanying the software: dictation is a skill that requires "one to three
months" to become adept at. This reflects our frequent reminders about the
need to help kids who are trying to use SR, and especially continuous SR,
develop a different model of speaking for dictation than that they use for
talking. In other words, they have to think "writing"`and NOT "talking" in
order to help them develop good dictation skill.
Does anyone out there have any thoughts about this, or tricks to help kids do
it?
Thanks,
Bob
