Hi Bob,
I have indeed used continuous speech recognition--well, at least, I've
tried tensor Dragon NaturallySpeaking, although only with a cheap and
nasty microphone. I didn't manage to get reasonable results at
all--in fact the "Audio Wizard" said that my level of voice was
unacceptably low, almost all of the many times I tried it. But
anyway, I agree completely with what you said: why mess with what
works for me?
My own dysarthria is not really TOO bad; actually, my speech, although
fairly slow and a little halting, is quite reasonable, if a little
awkward (by which I mean "Irregular"/"unpredictable"). My own
brother, who also has FA, has markedly worse dysarthria, as do several
people I've come across on the "InterNAF" mailing list. Still, my
dysarthria is bad enough that I was very pleased to find that
DragonDictate works well for me (although perhaps I have to speak even
more slowly than is usual for discrete speech recognition--not much
though, and it's skills a lot faster than typing).
No, I don't mind you asking my age all--it's 26. I use DragonDictate
for writing letters and email, as well as for quite a bit of control
of the computer--in particular, for filling in forms in Netscape. I'm
currently, alas, between jobs--I graduated with a Ph.D. in mathematics
recently but there are very few jobs available in academia (that's the
sort of job that I'd really like) around here, and I don't REALLY
thank I want to move overseas, although I'm originally from New
Zealand and I don't think I'd mind moving back there, or even to
England (I spent a year of my Ph.D. there). I think the USA is
probably one of the best places to look for a job in academia, but
unfortunately I don't think immigration there is a very good option,
what with the high cost of medical insurance etc. Besides which, I
LIKE Australia.
Cheerio, Chris
