I thought I'd share an experience today I had with a student who is
actually out of high school but is preparing for a community college.
He is about 3 years post head injury and using Dragon Dictate classic
3.0. I have been using the Trillium Speech Project manual for
implementing DD. Even though it is written for learning disabilities,
it presents simplified lessons (which with this particular individual,
was important). We have spent three weeks with him dictating and an
aide making ALL corrections using the keyboard. Today he was ready and
motivated to use the choice list and spell mode.
However, when he attempted to spell letters in spell mode
(alpha-papa-lima...) it would type the word "alpha" rather than an "a".
It did it for all the letters. Fustration level of the student was at a
high! We had to go back in and train each of the letters in order for
dragon to type the letter rather than the word. I assume this happened
because Dragon bases its guesses on frequency of use (and we hadn't used
the letters since the initial quick training).
Just thought I'd pass this along in case anyone else runs into the same
problem.
