I found Sharon and Jennifer's comments rather interesting, and have
taken the liberty of quoting them on our new web page on "How dictation
systems benefit the education of students with writing difficulties" at

Sharon (if not let me know).
There is also a brief summary of a UK research project which showed
improvements in reading, spelling and quantity and quality of subsequent
**hand** written work.
