That (i.e., the reading required) is certainly one of the big problems with
the continuous speech programs, although a couple of people on the listserv
have reported assisting the student being trained by reading each passage to
them first before they (the student) attempts the training. This seems like a
fine strategy for the patient parent, or very rare teacher, but not a very
effective approach for most users.
