Barbara,
Thanks for the URL. I took a look at it at it was very similar to reviews I've
seen elsewhere in the press (e.g., Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Speech
Technology, Boston Globe) in that it addressed many important issues, such as
accuracy, speed, etc. Most of the reviewers have similarly had a slight
preference for NaturallySpeaking Preferred, but not all.
These reviews are useful only as far as they go, and when two products are as
similar as these, there is other information to consider, and we believe that
there are certainly developmental and processing issues with the use of
continuous speech which are never addressed in these journals. However, in
those situations where continuous speech DOES seem to be an appropriate
solution, most of the students we have worked with greatly prefer the
correction routines in NaturallySpeaking over ViaVoice, because the former
operate like word prediction (and like those in DragonDictate)--the lists
change dynamically when the user has to spell the target word--whereas the
correction lists in ViaVoice are static--if the target word is not in the
list, the user must spell the entire word. This is clearly not preferred for
many students with learning disabilities..
Do you have many students using speech at SCSU? What are you finding?
Bob
