1. YES Hyderabad Forum held from Dec. 14- 18, 2003 achieves spectacular
success
For five days ? December 14 ? 18, 2003 delegates from 44 countries
descended upon the bedecked city of Hyderabad - capital of Andhra Pradesh,
India, to participate in the first ever YES Regional Forum. The city was
festooned with flags, banners, hoardings and other decorations to welcome
delegates to the Forum. The festivities were on till wee hours of the night
with artists of the caliber of the legendary tabla maestro Zakir Hussain
making public performances for thousands of young people from all over
Asia, Andhra Pradesh and for the citizens of Hyderabad.
During the opening ceremony the dynamic Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh
welcomed all delegates and distinguished speakers to his beautiful city and
encouraged everyone to not only work hard, but to also take time to enjoy
the public concerts, the delicious Hyderabadi food, the wonderful historic
sites and to indulge in the pleasures of shopping, especially of pearls.
The five days were glorious, filled with learning about "what works" and
"promising strategies" in the five selected sectors of renewable energy,
on-farm and off farm, water and sanitation, ICT and HIV/AIDS. The
distinguished speakers offered time for dialogue and conversation.
Delegates met old friends and forged new relationships, new networks were
formed and there was time to visit the innovation marketplace and learn new
things.
It was a time to reflect on how far the campaign had progressed since
September 2002 when it was launched with great fanfare in Alexandria, and a
time to redouble commitments to fulfilling the goals of the campaign.
Plans were made for 2004, and the delegates bid adieu promising to meet
next at the Mexico Summit ? October 4 ? 8, 2004 at Boca del Rio, Veracruz.
Mr. Esteban Gonzalez, co-chair of the YES Campaign announced the Mexico YES
2004 plans at a gala Forum session and rocked the delegates with Mexican
music and visions of Veracruz.
2. Hyderabad Blueprint adopted by delegates to the YES Hyderabad Regional
Forum
Delegates from 44 countries from around the world adopted the Hyderabad

YES Academy designed to be a world-first hub for youth employment issues.
Andhra Pradesh is leading the way in ensuring that no young person gets
left behind. The formation of the YES Academy displays a powerful coalition
of political will, technology and youth engagement expressed though its
lead partners - the Government of Andhra Pradesh, MS Swaminathan Foundation
and the YES Campaign.
In addition the UN and multilateral agencies showed their commitment to the
YES Campaign by joining hands in launching pilot projects with the Academy.
A powerful group of agencies that include EDC, UNIDO, UNDP, UNHABITAT,
UNEVOC, FAO, and the Commonwealth Youth Program joined hands to work
towards empowering youth to build sustainable livelihoods.

6. Renewable Energy Website Launched by YES Peru
A new Spanish renewable energy online resource is now available thanks to
the work of YES members in Peru. The site details the progress of BIOSOL, a
new project linking renewable energy technologies with youth
entrepreneurship. The Peru project utilizes biomass technology, which
converts organic matter into methane gas which can be used for cooking and
lighting. Liquid and solid organic fertilizers are also produced as
by-products of this process.
Check out BIOSOL at http://www.webvias.com/biosol/
Launched as part of the YES Renewable Energy Fellowships Program, BIOSOL is
introducing a number of biomass sites into off-grid communities in Peru in
2004. The aim of the pilot project is to demonstrate the effectiveness of
biomass technology, to promote renewable energy technologies in Peru, and
to train youth in their use.
Ms. Ursula Carrascal Vizarreta is the Renewable Energy Fellow in Peru.
