Discrimination in Employment, the October Discussion Topic on the YES list
Can we create a full classification of youth who still suffer from
discriminatory barriers in their endeavors to secure employment, as they
seek to join the labour force for the first time. E.g. Disabled, women,
etc.
Barriers to youth employment come in many forms. One of the most oppressive
barriers is discrimination. Discrimination promotes subjective, whimsical,
and, prejudicial recruitment practices. This has a very scarring effect on
the mind of the Discriminated.
The 'scarring effect of unemployment' is most visible here. Discriminatory
rejection of able job candidates saps their very vitality. Indirect
discrimination of the worst type was perpetrated by the regime in
Afghanistan against the female gender. Females were not entitled to
education beyond the age of thirteen. They were thus, prevented from
acquiring the required skills to obtain employment. They could never step
into the employment market. This was a barrier of the worst type.
Another barrier to youth employment can be seen in the Florida Government's
decision to ban off-shore sourcing of services. This hurt the youth in
developing countries like Tanzania, Cot d Ivory etc. When Florida business
seeks to sell their products in these countries, equal opportunity should
be given to youth on the other side of the Digital Divide, to earn their
livelihood in this global village. This month's topic seeks participatory
responses from members.
If you are aware of such discriminatory practices, how-so-ever minor,
please do write in to us. In short, we request you to please point out the
types of discriminations and discriminatory practices, which result in the
denial of jobs to able youth candidates.
