Discussion Summary ? Privatization of Education

Within developing regions, as in other parts of the world, shifts in the
ownership, management and control of education institutions can be
observed. In some cases this involves an increased role for governments;
but in other cases it involves a reduced role. The latter is more common
than the former.

Advocates for privatization of education claim that because public
education is a government monopoly it inherently denies consumers free
choice in their children's education. This leaves them worse off than they
would be under competitive conditions, for two reasons:

1. Many consumers are less than optimally satisfied since they would choose
an educational alternative if they could;

2. And schools are not compelled to produce as much output as schools would
(for the same cost) if they faced competition.

In the third major meta topic on Education, Employment & Youth mailing
list, we set out to explore these issues in detail; delineating
privatization in the developing world . The main issues dealt with were:

1. Share of private sector in the provision of education in our
respective countries

2. Quality of education which the corporate sector provides

3. Access of poor to private education.

4. Pros and cons of education in government schools, colleges and
universities
