Dear Friends,
Greetings from the YES Secretariat in Boston! We hope this letter finds you
in excellent spirits and good cheer as the year 2002 draws to a close.
2002 has been a big and dramatic year for many of us in many ways. For
those of us who call ourselves members of the YES Community, 2002 is a year
we will remember with particular fondness as the year we collectively
launched the YES Campaign. It was a stupendous effort from all involved to
stage a successful Alexandria Summit to launch the campaign.
Of special note is the dedicated work of YES Country Networks, the
coordinators and the many members who create the excitement and interest at
local and national levels and focus the attention of senior leaders on the
issue of youth employment. This is not an easy task and we at the YES
Secretariat salute you all for the marvelous achievement of Alexandria
Summit 2002.
The year cannot pass without expressing a special thank you to the members
of YES Organizing Committee, and particularly its Chairman, Dr Ismail
Serageldin. Without the efforts of Dr Serageldin and the Organizing
Committee there would be no Alexandria Summit, and no YES Campaign. On
behalf of the YES Community I thank these members for their courage and
leadership.
As you may know the leadership of YES has passed on from the YES Organizing
Committee to the YES Campaign Committee. Dr. Serageldin, YES Organizing
Committee Chair, has passed on the torch to the new Co-Chairs of the YES
Campaign Committee, Sr. Carlos Magarinos, Director-General of the United
Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and Sr. Esteban
Gonzalez, President of Nexus International, a Mexican entrepreneurship
incubator. The YES Community is greatly honored by the involvement of Sr.
Magarinos and Sr. Gonzalez in the YES Campaign, and we thank them for their
leadership.
Looking forward, we have a great deal of work to do. The YES Campaign,
guided by the Alexandria Declaration and the YES Framework for Action,
calls on us all to be full of hope and energy for what we will achieve in
2003 and beyond. Successes and achievements marked the path of the year
that was, and our challenge is to meet and exceed these achievements in the
new year.
So let me, on behalf of the YES Secretariat staff and the YES Campaign
Committee, once again congratulate you all on a very successful year, and
thank you for your inspiration, leadership and ceaseless energy.
Happy New Year and best wishes for success, happiness and peace in 2003.
