Foso
Foso is the district capital of Assin-Foso and is easily accessible by a good road. Amenities available in the community include a police station, post office, bank, markets, Magistrate Court, electricity, and library. The school is located at the Foso Training College and is the leading primary school in the district. The school is used as an on-campus teaching practice school by the teacher trainees. It consists of a 6-unit sandcrete classroom block with an isolated room outside the school compound being used as an office and a store.
During the PRA exercises in March 1998, the community members in Foso were relatively happy with the school, as academic performance was generally good, teachers were adequate in number and qualified, and facilities were good. However, there were still many issues which they thought needed to be addressed. Most immediate were the inadequate supplies of textbooks, teaching and learning materials, and recreational facilities. Other concerns included:
- Children were often tardy to school, had poor discipline, and spent evenings watching movies.
- Teacher motivation was low, partly due to a lack of support from parents.
- Relationships between parents and teachers were poor.
- Community had lost its sense of ownership of the school.
- PTA was active, but general PTA meetings were not regular.
- The SMC was relatively new and had had only one meeting.
- There was a lack of accommodation for newly posted teachers.
The Foso community has improved significantly in the past eighteen months, especially in the areas of empowerment, management, participation, quality, and transparency. Many of these improvements have been encouraged by the head teacher, who ensures that the SMC and PTA meet regularly with parents to discuss school issues, effectively supervises the teachers, and works to ensure effective classrooms. Examples of developments include:
- SMC and PTA have organized members to raise funds to buy a school vehicle, first aid supplies, and jerseys and a football.
- District education officials and a member of parliament have begun to educate the community on the essence of education being a shared responsibility of community and government.
- PTA has taken the lead in making sure that teachers are punctual and make good use of instructional time.
- SMC and PTA have ensured that projects planned by the community are implemented.
- Structures have been put in place to help parents and teachers interact better and work to resolve issues more amicably.
- Attendance at PTA meetings has improved.
- Incentive packages for teachers have been put in place to boost morale.
